So I need to replace my head gasket in the near future. I have an eBay gift card, so I figured I would check there first.

I’m no expert, but are those bolts really worth more than the gaskets themselves? I’m sure mine are still okay so I don’t need new ones, but that seems a little steep.

Once you remove the old ones, they will need replaced IIRC.

Ah, alright. Damn. I’ll probably get a shop to do it anyway, though. I need my coolant flushed and the reservoir (possibly more, too) cleaned out extra hard, too. The head gasket is seeping oil into the coolant and gunking everything up. Still runs fine, albeit slightly hotter than usual, but I’m hoping to fix the leak before it starts going the other way.

If you are replacing the head gasket then I recommend replacing the head bolts as well. If they are torque-to-yield type bolts then replacement is required.

yup. At least you can get those outside of the dealer. When I did my Volvo V70 I had to go through the dealer to the tune of $11.50/bolt x 12.

Most head bolts are one-time-use. Most techs replace even the non-one-time-use versions every time. Even if it’s not required, it’s a very good idea. They can range from $3-25 each, depending on application and manufacturer.

At least you’ve caught it before the head needs work. It’s a shitty ordeal then. And expensive.

Replace the bolts. It’s worth the price. Those are actually cheaper than my Jeep’s I think.

Not getting those ones, most likely. Just the first results I found.

What is it, like, 10 bolts? At $3 each? Cheap hardware bolts that size will be what, $1 each, right? So you’re getting a good quality high precision bolt made from a good quality material which will behave in an exact way under the tension from torquing down and withstand pretty the amount of force that’s pushing your car forward. For only $2 more than the shitty bolt you can buy at the hardware store.

Yes, replace those single-use bolts when you replace your head gasket. Make sure you follow the instructions in your manual on how to replace them correctly. (Some of them have kind-of-screwy instructions, but all the weird fasteners I have installed have done exactly what they were supposed to do.)
You don’t want to replace the head gasket twice if you do not need to. . .
